The Social Science Library is located in the Manor Road Building.

There is ramped access to the main external concourse. There are also 3 steps up to the concourse.

To enter the buildings there are revolving doors and a powered door to the left. Once inside cross the lobby and directly in front of you is the library entrance which has powered automatic doors.

Inside the library you will see secure gates; the entrance gate is to the left and the exit to the right. People with larger wheelchairs can use the wider exit gates as an accessible entrance using the card reader attached to the front desk – this is marked with a wheelchair symbol. You will need to register your card before using the wider accessible gate for the first time. Please contact craig.finlay@bodleian.ox.ac.uk to request this.

Inside the Social Science Library there is a long welcome/information desk. The desk is all at a wheelchair accessible height but does not have a recessed knee space. There is a fixed loop system in place at the welcome desk.

Accessible toilets

There is one accessible toilet located before reaching the entry gates but within the library itself.

There is a heavy door that pulls towards you and some wheelchair users might find the toilet a bit tight.

If this is problematic there are additional toilets in the building and a porter can direct you accordingly.

Standard toilets

The standard toilets are located just within the Social Sciences Library (straight ahead as you pass through the automatic doors).

Pass through the door and down a small corridor.

The Women's are on the left, and the Men's on the right.

As the library is located on the ground floor there are no stairs and the entire library is level access.

The library has very few doors as it is open plan.  The main entrance doors are sliding power doors.  Any other internal doors are large black doors without a visual panel, although all are attached to glazed rooms (with blinds), therefore some caution is recommended.

The entirety of the library (bar seminar rooms and carrels) is one large reading room. It is open plan, divided by shelving and workstations.  It is well lit with natural light and has vibrant high contrast furniture.  Some of the shelving is quite high and may require assistance to reach books. One additional point is that some of the plug sockets are located within floor panels that might be hard for wheelchair users to access.

If you require a quiet working space, there are a handful of carrels.  Contact the disability librarian if you have this requirement: craig.finlay@bodleian.ox.ac.uk

There are 3 graduate study rooms located at the rear of the library. All have level access and moveable furniture which can be rearranged as needed. There are also two discussion rooms and an Information Skills Training Room; these must be booked in advance and are available to members of the Social Sciences Division.

There is a common room located on the first floor (adjacent to the cafe), for those that need level access it will be necessary to get an escort with the porters who will take you up in the lift and through some office space.
