  • There is no parking at the Life and Mind Building.
  • Two bookable Blue Badge parking bays are available at the William Dunn Building opposite. These bays are only available for Experimental Psychology participants and some public events.
  • Please do not use the bays unless you have confirmed this in advance.
  • The bays are less than 100 metres from the entrance via a controlled crossing point.

Main entrance

The main entrance is at street level and provides step-free access into the building.

  • A non-secure revolving door is available at the entrance.
  • A powered swing door with push button controls provides secure access into the building.
  • An intercom is available at the entrance.
  • Reception is located close to the entrance and staffed during building opening hours.
  • A hearing loop is available at reception.
  • Passenger lifts near reception provide access to all floors.

Lower ground floor entrance

The lower ground floor entrance provides direct access to lecture theatres and seminar rooms.

  • The entrance can be reached using an external lift or external steps.
  • A non-secure revolving door is available at the entrance.
  • A powered door with push button controls provides secure access into the building.
  • Lift access is available from the lower ground floor to the upper floors of the building.

Main reception

The main reception is located close to the street-level main entrance.

  • Reception is staffed during normal building opening hours.
  • A hearing loop is available at the reception desk.
  • An accessible section of the reception desk is available.
  • Passenger lifts are located near reception.
  • Seating is available near reception.

Lower ground floor reception

A second reception desk is located near the lower ground floor entrance.

  • This reception area is usually staffed during events only.
  • A hearing loop is available at the reception desk.
  • An accessible section of the reception desk is available.
  • Lift access is available from the lower ground floor to the upper floors of the building.
  • Seating is available near reception.

Accessible toilets are available on all floors.

Accessible toilets include:

  • outward-opening doors
  • grab rails beside the toilet and sink
  • emergency pull cord alarms
  • transfer space beside the toilet

Accessible toilets with both left-hand and right-hand transfer space are available throughout the building.

Lower ground floor

Accessible toilets are available near the reception area, lecture theatres and seminar rooms.

An accessible shower room is also available.

The shower includes:

  • a drop-down seat
  • support rails
  • a handheld shower head
  • controls that can be reached from a seated position

Ground floor

Accessible toilets are available near the main entrance and café area.

A Changing Places toilet is available on the ground floor.

The Changing Places toilet includes:

  • a height-adjustable changing bench
  • a hoist
  • additional circulation space for carers and equipment

First, second, third and fourth floors

Accessible toilets are available within toilet areas on each floor.

Additional facilities

  • Gender neutral toilets are available throughout the building.
  • A Wellbeing/Baby Change Room is available on the second and third floors.

You can access all floors using passenger lifts.

  • Most circulation routes within the building are step-free.
  • Powered doors are provided in many circulation areas.
  • Doors into laboratories, teaching rooms and work areas are generally manual.
  • Some internal doors are heavy to open manually.
  • You can speak to reception staff if you require assistance.

Lecture theatres

There are two large lecture theatres and one small lecture theatre on the lower ground floor.

  • Doors to the lecture theatres are manual and heavy to open.
  • Auracast hearing support systems are available in all lecture theatres.
  • Lecture theatre seating is raked and most seating is accessed using steps.
  • Step-free access is available to the upper seating rows.
  • Wheelchair spaces with movable writing tables are available at both the upper and lower levels of the lecture theatres.
  • A dedicated lift provides step-free access to the lecture theatre stage areas.
  • The lecture theatre stages are flat floor.
  • Height-adjustable lecterns are available in the lecture theatres.

Seminar rooms and flexible teaching spaces

Seminar rooms and flexible teaching spaces are located on the lower ground floor.

  • Doors to seminar rooms are manual.
  • Seminar rooms and flexible teaching spaces are step-free and on one level.
  • Auracast hearing support systems are available in teaching spaces.

The lower ground floor contains the main teaching spaces and circulation areas and can become busy during teaching periods and events. The building also includes a large open atrium with high ceilings and extensive glazing around the entrance and café areas.

  • The café and lower ground floor foyer can become busy and noisy at peak times.
  • There is seating available in the lower ground floor foyer and circulation spaces.
  • A quieter shared study and workspace area is available on the lower ground floor.
  • Quiet pods, including wheelchair accessible pods, and quieter seating areas are available throughout the building.
  • “Town Centre” areas on the upper floors include kitchenettes and a mix of seating. These spaces can become busy at peak times.
  • Breakout and workspace areas on bridge connections between floors can feel open and exposed, although some high-backed seating is available.
  • Dedicated wheelchair spaces are not provided within the high-backed seating areas.
  • There is noticeable background air handling noise in some teaching rooms, lecture theatres and laboratory spaces.
  • Wellbeing/Baby Change Rooms and quieter terrace areas are available on the second and third floors.
  • An external terrace is available on the third floor.

The Experimental Psychology Department has an internal entrance within the building and a separate side entrance for participant visits and arranged access.

Internal entrance

The internal entrance is located on the ground floor.

  • The entrance has a powered door.
  • A staffed reception desk is located near the entrance.
  • Visitors and participants are usually escorted within the department.
  • An accessible toilet is available within the department.

Side entrance

A separate side entrance is available for participant visits and arranged access.

  • The entrance has an intercom and a powered door.
  • The entrance can be reached using a platform lift or external steps.
  • Visitors and participants are usually escorted within the department.
